Third-Party AI Processing
Who processes your data to generate tutoring responses
MathCat is an AI tutor, so the questions you ask are processed by large language models in order to produce an answer. We use third-party AI providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, as data processors for this purpose.
What is shared
The content of your prompt, any image or PDF you attach, and recent messages from the same conversation are sent to the AI provider serving your request. Notebook sources are sent when you generate a study guide, quiz, or audio overview from them.
Voice tutoring sends audio to OpenAI
When you start a realtime voice session, your microphone audio streams directly to OpenAI so the tutor can hear and reply to you. In the MathCat mobile apps this requires your explicit consent before the first session, and you can withdraw that consent at any time in Settings. Voice tutoring is off until you agree.
What is never shared
We do not send your name, email address, or MathCat account identifier to AI providers, and we do not sell your data or share it for advertising. We do not permit these providers to use your content to train their models.
Data Retention
How long we keep your information
- Account information is kept for as long as your account is active.
- Chats, notebooks, and attachments are kept until you delete them or delete your account.
- Realtime voice audio in the mobile apps streams directly to OpenAI and is not recorded or stored by MathCat.
- Live tutor sessions on the web can save a session recording to your account so you can replay it. These recordings are kept until you delete the session or your account.
- When you delete your account, we delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we must retain records to meet legal, tax, or accounting obligations.
Children's Privacy
Protecting younger users
MathCat is designed for educational use and may be used by students of various ages. We take the privacy of younger users seriously and are committed to complying with applicable laws, including the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA):
- We only collect information necessary for educational purposes
- For users under 13, we require verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information
- Parents or guardians can review, delete, or refuse further collection of their child's information by contacting us
- We do not share children's personal information with third parties for marketing purposes
- We do not condition a child's participation on the collection of more personal information than is reasonably necessary
